If you wish to learn Swedish in a group setting you can register with Scandinavia House in New York City. (AMSCAN - American Scandinavian foundation)

WINTER of 2023, the levels offered at AMSCAN are:
A1 LEVELS:
Swedish Beginner 1
60 min twice a week
Tuesdays, 6:10 – 7:10 pm (online only)
Thursdays, 8:00 - 9:00 pm (hybrid)
Format: Online and Hybrid (In person or online)
Start: 01/10 – 03/14
8 weeks/15 hours: No class Thurs 02/16, Tues 02/21, Thurs 02/23 and Tues 02/28
during Winter Recess
A course for people completely new to Swedish. The student will learn the very basics of Swedish structure and pronunciation while also discussing some quirks of Swedish life. No Prerequisites.
At the end of the semester students will know:
Swedish Beginner 2
100 minutes once a week
Mondays: 7:20 – 9:00 pm
Format: Hybrid (In person or online)
Start 01/09 -03/20
9 weeks/15 hours: No class Mon 02/20 and Mon 02/27 during Winter Recess.
This course is for those who are still new to Swedish but perhaps have studied some on their own using apps or through other means. They have a basic knowledge of sentence structure, greetings, know their numbers, how to tell time and already possess a small but basic vocabulary.
The students will learn sentence structure in sentences with more than one verb, placement of adverbs, plural endings, conjugation of adjectives, objective and possessive pronouns and the past tense. Various cultural aspects will be highlighted during the course. Prerequisite: Swedish Beginner 1 or equivalent.
At the end of the semester the students will know:
A2 LEVELS:
Swedish Advanced Beginner 1
60 minutes twice a week
Mondays 6:10 - 7:10 pm
Thursdays 6:50 - 7:50 pm
Format: hybrid (In person or online)
Start: 01/09 – 03/13
8 weeks/15 hours: No class Thurs 02/16, Mon 02/20, Thurs 02/23 and Mon 02/27 during Winter Recess.
In this course the students keep perfecting their previous learned skills and pronunciation, while also expanding into more complex sentence structure. Furthermore, the students will be asked to express their opinions or beliefs in simple discussions related to Swedish life within the themes studied. The students will be required to read a literary book over the course of the semester. Prerequisite Beginner 1-3 or equivalent.
At the end of the semester the student will know:
Swedish Advanced Beginner 2
100 minutes once a week
Tuesdays: 7:20 pm - 9:00 pm
Format: Online
Start: 01/10 - 03/21
9 Weeks/15 hours: No class Tues 02/21 and 02/28 during Winter Recess
The student is now ready to work more in depth with structure in various sub-clauses and will also learn how to use the reflexive possessive pronoun and more specific ways to express future. Moreover, the course introduces slightly more fact-based texts around cultural elements in regards to social and family life, as well as education, that will be discussed. Students will be required to read a literary book over the course of the semester. Prerequisite: Completed Level A1 Courses and Swedish Advanced Beginner 1 or equivalent.
At the end of the semester the students will know:
INTERMEDIATE LEVELS: B1-B2
Swedish Intermediate 3: Level B2
100 minutes once a week
Wednesdays: 6:30 – 8:10 pm
Format: Online
Start: 01/11 / 03/2
9 weeks/15 hours: No class Wed 02/15 and Wed 02/22 during Winter Recess
This level is based on conversation and grammatically the students now deal with finesse and formal language. Instead of expanding our writing, it’s about condensing. Discussions span traditions, Vikings and lore, unwritten societal norms, leadership, work and family structures as well as poetry. Intermediate 3 courses can be taken in any order. Prerequisite: completed B1 levels or equivalent.
At the end of the winter semester the students will know:

- Idiomatic expressions and the use of hel or all.
