SWEDISH BEGINNER 1
60 min twice a week

A course for people completely new to Swedish. The student will learn the very basics of Swedish structure and pronunciation while also discussing some quirks of Swedish life. No Prerequisites.
At the end of the semester students will know:

This course is for those who are still new to Swedish but perhaps have studied some on their own using apps or through other means. They have a basic knowledge of sentence structure, greetings, know their numbers, how to tell time and already possess a small but basic vocabulary.
This semester the students will move beyond themselves and explore how to buy and order things, talk about what they do in their spare time, and read about an historical figure. Grammatically they will expand into other tenses and learn how adjectives and nouns inform each other. Various facets of Swedish life may be discussed during the course. Prerequisite: Swedish Beginner 1 or equivalent.
At the end of the semester the students will know:

This course continues to build on our basic skills by introducing indefinite pronouns and the comparative of the adjective. Present perfect tense is introduced, as well as a few ways to express future. At the end the students will be able to talk about their routines, what they like to do, ask for directions, compare products and talk about things they’ve done in the past. Various cultural aspects will be highlighted during the course. The students will also be required to read a few easy read books (level 2) over the course of the semester. Prerequisite: Swedish Beginner 2 or equivalent.
At the end of the semester the students will know:
Talk about things they have done, make plans, compare products and make purchases and ask for or give directions.
A2 LEVELS:
Swedish ADVANCED BEGINNER 1
60 minutes twice a week

In this course the students keep perfecting their previous learned skills and pronunciation, while also expanding into more complex sentence structure. Furthermore, the students will be asked to express their opinions or beliefs in simple discussions related to Swedish life within the themes studied. The students will be required to read a couple of easy read books (level 3) over the course of the semester. Prerequisite: Swedish Beginner 3 or equivalent.
At the end of the semester the student will know:
Swedish ADVANCED BEGINNER 2 - Will be offered in the fall semester of 2024

Now the student is ready to work more in depth with structure in various sub-clauses. The students also learn how to use the reflexive possessive pronouns and more specific ways to express future while slightly more fact-based texts are introduced. The course also includes cultural elements in regards to social and family life, as well as education that will be discussed.
Prerequisite: Swedish Advanced Beginner 1 or equivalent.
At the end of the semester the students will know:
Talk about their education and future plans, while also be able to retell stories told to them.
Swedish ADVANCED BEGINNER 3
60 minutes twice a week
Tuesdays: 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm (hybrid)
Thursdays: 6:10 pm - 7:10 pm (online)
Format: Online and hybrid (in person or online)

8 Weeks/15 hours: No Class April 23 and 25 (spring break) and May 9
As the student approaches intermediate level, the course begins to shift focus to more conversation. This semester the students learn about the body and illnesses, while also working intensely with presentation and how to compare things; introducing definite form superlative, as well as frequency and short answers. Cultural aspects of living, health and work culture will be highlighted during the course. Prerequisite: Swedish Advanced Beginner 2 or equivalent.
At the end of the semester the students will know:
Talk about how they feel physically, explain how they live, describe and compare things, conduct short conversations where there is an exchange of information and give instructions.
INTERMEDIATE LEVELS: B1-B2
Swedish INTERMEDIATE 1: Level B1
100 minutes once a week
Thursdays: 7:20 - 9:00 pm

9 weeks/15 hours: No class April 25 for Spring Break
At this level the course focus is primarily on conversation. The students discuss various subjects brought up in each chapter via the informative texts. Topics span Swedish cultural and social life, wild animals, historical figures, and politics, for example. The grammar is overall a comprehensive repetition of the beginner levels, while also introducing a few new things, like reflexive pronouns, the present participle and the conditional. Students will be required to read assigned books over the course of the semester.
Intermediate 1 runs over three semesters and can be taken in any order.
Pre-requisite: Completed the Advanced Beginner levels or equivalent.
Swedish ADVANCED INTERMEDIATE: Level B2-C1
100 minutes once a week

Format: Hybrid (In person or online)

9 weeks/15 hours: No class April 23 for Spring Break
This course is aimed for those who are a bit more advanced and already speak the language without too much effort and easily reads novels in the target language. Students will engage in conversation and discussions. The themes are of a more philosophical nature and spin around global questions and fiction. Grammatically, various structures and conjugations will be reviewed so students can refine their speech and writing. Students will be assigned a book to read during the semester.
Pre-requisite: Intermediate 3.
